2011 Beauty for a Cure
Hair Cut-A-Thon

November 7, 2011

One day out of nowhere I got a call from a woman named Christina Smith.

Christina told me that she holds a "Beauty For A Cure" Hair Cut-A-Thon, at her salon during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and raised a lot of money.  I was so overwhelmed with gratitude that Christina said, “This year I want to expand and help a few more coalitions, and West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition is one she chose.”

Beauty for a Cure was established by Christina Smith, to obtain the resources to help with funding for non-profit organizations dedicated to helping our Long Island women.  Christina holds an annual fundraising event at Top Cuts Hair Salon in Bethpage, NY to benefit local breast cancer coalitions in West Islip, Babylon, Great Neck and Long Beach.

However, that is not all, this year she ran a Lacrosse Tournament, along with several other events during the month to raise a whopping $33,000! Christina vowed to share that money with the four Coalitions she chose to support this year.

Christina is a remarkable woman and I am in awe of her ambition to give back in such a big way, where she was only helped in a small way.  I am so pleased to have met her, and know that we already have developed a friendship that will keep growing each year.

These are words by Christina Smith herself.

During this time is when I came to know the full aspect of the help that was available to me. I never dreamed of the support of non-profit organizations, until I met others in similar circumstances.  You are brought together by Faith~ Strength, Hope and Love For each other.  We are brought together because we love life!  For the first time I was not fully in control of my life. I was used to being the person in control; the one others sought after for help.  The hardest thing was to admit I was the one who needed help. I felt I was taking advantage of the organization's goodness by accepting their help. I felt there was always someone else who needed it more than me.  It was hard for me to identify that I was that person in need.  After all is said and done I can proudly say I am cancer free.  I have made lifelong friends. Now I am driven by a calling, I have been given a second chance at life and I need to make a difference."

Christina has made a difference, a big difference, and it is people like her who give others the encouragement to help one another in any way we can. On behalf of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, I wish to Thank Christina from the bottom of our hearts.
