Nineteen ninety-two marked the year that twelve women, alarmed by the astounding rate of Breast Cancer on Long Island, joined together to establish the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. Through their efforts The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition initiated and completed the "first of its kind" door-to-door demographic mapping survey in West Islip. The two-year, 8,750 home survey elicited an outstanding response of over 62% from the West Islip community and in 1995, resulted in the investigation of potential factors and geographic settings within the hamlet. Also in 1992, WIBCC board members and breast cancer survivors, in collaboration with Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center administrators, created the first comprehensive patient-oriented Breast Health Center on Long Island. To this day, WIBCC members actively participate in the Center serving as liaisons to offer constructive input to enhance the service and care provide to patients and families affected by Breast Cancer.
